During her 17 years with the Minneapolis Police Department, Sergeant Pat Nelson worked in a variety of areas, including 4th Precinct – Patrol, 4th Precinct CRT, as a SWAT Negotiator, Academy Instructor, FTO, as a Downtown Patrol Supervisor and in investigations in Crimes Against Children and Robbery. She just recently retired from service from the Department.

The two most memorable times in Sgt. Nelson’s career include her time working the 4th Precinct dogwatch and being a SWAT negotiator running SWAT mock operations.

For those just beginning their careers, she recommends to continue learning and remember that you are only dealing with a small percentage of the population. And finally, have fun!

Now that she has retired from the Department, Sgt. Nelson, who has finished her Ph.D., plans to work full time as a faculty member at Minnesota State University Mankato in the Law Enforcement Program, a transition that suits her well due to back problems.
