September 27, 2016 Mankato Free Press Out of Line

Saint Paul Police Federation

Cops go out and work hard every day. We face more challenges and dangers in a single tour than many citizens do in a lifetime. So many ignorant attacks are directed at us – we’ve almost become numb to their effect. This cartoon was printed in today’s Mankato Free Press. To say the least – it irritated me, and many other fellow cops. It’s irresponsible and ignorant. Joe Spear is the managing editor. He has not responded to our concerns. He can be emailed at jspear@mankatofreepress.com.

Markets Waiting in Limbo For Fed News

Market volatility continues to increase as the debate rages on regarding the plans for an impending Fed rate increase. Adding fuel to the fire, the rate picture has been further obscured by two big offsetting reports from last week.

Helping the case for no hike, retail sales fell 0.3% from July. Excluding the volatile auto component, retail sales also fell far short of the expected levels with a small decline from July. After a strong start, Retail Sales have slowed again during the last two months, though, leaving investors and Fed officials wondering what future data will reveal.

Making the opposite case for an immediate rate hike, the Consumer Price Index (CPI), a widely followed monthly inflation report, revealed higher than expected levels of overall inflation and core inflation. CPI looks at the price change for goods and services which are sold to consumers. Core CPI excludes the volatile food and energy components, which provides a better sense of the underlying trend. Core inflation in August was 2.3% higher than a year ago, up from a 2.2% annual rate last month.

These offsetting influences caused little net change in investor expectations for future Fed policy. The odds makers are still betting on no rate hike this time, but stay tuned……….

Rates Tick Up on Big Job Report

Mortgage rates increased following the release of Friday’s upside surprise in the important monthly Employment report. Against a consensus forecast of 180K, the economy added 255K jobs in July. In addition, upward revisions added 18K jobs to the results for prior months. Stronger job and wage gains are negative for mortgage rates, since they increase the outlook for future inflation.

Rates would have moved even higher, but in a rate friendly move, the Bank of England (BOE) announced a 25 basis point rate cut and a new bond purchase program to stimulate economic activity. Investors had expected the rate cut, but the additional bond purchases were a surprise to some. added demand for bonds from the BOE helped push global bond prices higher and yields lower, including U.S. mortgage rates.

July 18, 2016 Fallen Baton Rouge Officers

Baton Rouge

“The thoughts and prayers of the Police Officers Federation of Minneapolis are with the families of the fallen officers and the Baton Rouge community as they mourn the loss of men who dedicated their life to service. Now more than ever, law enforcement needs the support of the community and the community needs law enforcement.  We need to come together in unity – the future starts by building relationships and increasing trust.

Over the past year false narratives of officer involved incidents forwarded by agenda driven organizations and perpetuated by the media have driven our communities apart. Our elected officials have at best stood on the sidelines and at worst forwarded an agenda criminalizing police actions and furthering this divide.

Relationships are built on the streets by people – not through the media, not by politicians and not by agenda driven organizations.  Real people, real work, real solutions.

The future starts now by building relationships and increasing trust.”
