img_pic_old_carThe City of Minneapolis was incorporated in 1867 and had a population of about 5,000. Today 580 plus police officers serve the 58 square mile city, with a population of 423,000. By 1998 calls for police service in the city topped 414,000. As we embark on the 21st Century, the police officers of the city will continue our 132-year history of professional policing. Throughout the history of the city, police officers have served their community and their country. During World War II, 117 Minneapolis police officers served in our country’s military forces.

The Police Officers Federation of Minneapolis was founded in 1916. The Federation was incorporated in 1965 to represent the police officers of the Minneapolis Police Department and the Minneapolis Park Police. In 1972 the first legal contracts were made between the Federation and the city. The Federation represents 580 plus police officers.

The Federation members elect a board of directors that consist of a President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, Directors (5) and a Park Police representative. The purpose of the Federation is to foster and encourage a high degree of professionalism and to elevate and improve the working conditions of its members. The Federation also represents the police officers of the city in contract negotiations, matters related to working conditions, contractual disputes, grievance issues and arbitrations. Beyond the direct services to our members, we believe it is important to state our positions on issues that affect not only our members but also the citizens of Minneapolis. We strive to provide information to our members and to the residents of Minneapolis in relation to day to day events that affect them and their community.
